Importance of Water in Our Lives

Water is vital for life - clean water is one of the most basic needs for human survival and the good health of a community. Everyone should have access to clean drinking water and sanitation. Unfortunately, around 2 billion people worldwide live in areas where clean water is scarcely available and are forced to use unsafe drinking sources, according to the data collected by WHO. This puts them at risk of contracting diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, hepatitis A, dysentery, typhoid, and polio, and is estimated to cause 505,000 diarrhoeal deaths each year. Those infected with infectious diseases can pass them on to others, causing a bigger strain on health systems.

Water is indispensable for a host of everyday needs, including purification for purposes of faith. There are many mentions of water in the Quran. According to one verse in chapter 8:

“It is He who sends down water upon you from heaven with which to purify you.” (8:11)

Safe Water Ensures Economic Progress

Safe water means better health, which in turn means better economic progress. The resources spent on the collection of water and treatment of water-borne diseases can be saved and utilised for more productive purposes. A fit and healthy individual can perform better in education and employment and, as a result, contribute better towards the development of their communities.

Charity Meals is dedicated to achieving this goal by ensuring no one suffers from dehydration or malnutrition. Our hardworking team is working to provide safe water to deprived communities in many countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Please support one of Charity Meals’ safe water projects and donate towards the building of hand pumps, water wells or water purification plants.

Donate a Water Well in Someone's Name – Continued Charity

Water is a great blessing in life. You can donate a water well on behalf of a loved one or a deceased relative. It is an act of continued charity, as mentioned in a hadith of the Prophet (SAW).

The Prophet (SAW) said: “When a person dies, all his good deeds come to an end except three: Ongoing charity, or beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who will pray for him.”

Imagine the reward you both will earn by building a water well in a community which is deprived of safe drinking water. Clean water is essential for personal hygiene as well as other household tasks of cleanliness. Ensure the supply of clean water to those in desperate need of it and perform an act of continued reward for your loved ones who have passed away.

In a narration from the Prophet (SAW), a man said to the Prophet: “My mother died suddenly, and she did not leave a will, but I think that if she could have spoken, she would have given in charity. Will she have a reward if I give in charity on her behalf?” The Prophet SAW said: “Yes.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, no. 1388)

A Sustainable Water Source

Donating water is the best form of charity in Islam.

‘The Messenger of Allah (SAW) was asked, “Which charity is best?” He replied, “[Providing] water”.’ [Abu Dawud]

Water wells are a sustainable solution to the lack of appropriate water supply. Tube water wells have lower maintenance costs and higher efficiency in procuring water and preventing it from contamination because of their sealed nature.  This can contribute to better disease prevention and better public health.

Open water wells are mostly cost-effective to build and provide a sustainable water source. Traditional wells often involve community partnerships in their construction and management, fostering a sense of ownership and community engagement. In rural areas, they fulfil the need for drinking water, domestic use, and irrigation.

Charity Meals works with local volunteers, conducting water tests and educating communities on water hygiene and managing water structures.

For £25 a month, you can build a tube well for a family. The one-off cost of a water well is £300, and £800 is for a deep water well.  Donate generously to Charity Meals’ clean water projects and earn immense rewards.
