Zakat Calculator

Zakat is at the heart of the welfare system of a Muslim community. Islam places huge importance on spending on those in need and looking after vulnerable individuals like orphans and widows. In the Quran, this is mentioned as the criteria for achieving piety and true faith.

“You shall never attain righteousness unless you spend from what you love. Whatsoever you spend, Allah is fully aware of it.” [Al-Quran 3:92]

What is Zakat?

The following verse of the Quran throws light on the obligation, purpose and details of Zakat's expenditure.

“Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed for it and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveller - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” [Al-Quran 9:60]

The above verse from the Quran specifies the obligation of Zakat, which is a compulsory donation in Islam and a third pillar of the faith. Zakat is obligatory on certain kinds of wealth, including livestock, trade goods, gold, silver, crops, fruit and buried treasure. Zakat has to be paid once a whole lunar year has been passed on the wealth in one’s possession. The other condition is that the wealth should meet the Nisab amount – the minimum threshold value for the obligation to be established.

How to Calculate Zakat

Zakat is an important part of being a Muslim. Denying Zakat makes a person a disbeliever, and withholding it makes him sinful. The believers strive hard to pay Zakat sincerely to fulfil their religious obligation and to earn the pleasure of Allah (SWT).

To calculate Zakat, you can start by establishing that your wealth meets the Nisab threshold, which is equivalent to 85 grams of pure gold. In establishing eligibility, it is important to know the percentage that has to be paid on Zakat's applicable wealth.

Calculating Zakat on Cash

Zakat is calculated as 2.5% of cash or money held by someone during the past year. You can calculate Zakat by following the simple steps given below.

  • Work out what you own, including cash in your bank account, at home and cash that is owed to you.
  • Then take off what you owe (any debts).
  • Work out the balance and check that it is more than the Nisab value.
  • Work out 2.5% of that - it will give you the Zakat amount.

How Do You Calculate Zakat on Income?

Zakat on income or salary is similar to Zakat on money held for a year. The method that has been recommended for convenience is paying Zakat on all the money an individual possesses when one year has passed from the time when their wealth first reached the Nisab.

Zakat Calculator on Gold

With the Zakat calculator above, it is easy to calculate how much Zakat to pay for gold. Check the updated value of gold in the market and work out the current value of your gold by multiplying it by gold weight. Put the resulting figure in the calculator above, and you will get the total Zakat amount you need to pay straight away.

While the Zakat calculator on gold comes in handy for working out your Zakat, it is useful to know how to calculate Zakat on gold manually. First of all, you need to know the weight of the gold, or the number of grams involved. After that, the number of grams is multiplied by the carats and then divided by 24. The resulting figure will give the value of the pure, 24-carat gold. If this figure reaches 85 grams or more (which is the Nisab threshold), then Zakat must be paid on it at the rate of 2.5%.

Zakat-al-Fitr Calculator

Zakat-al-Fitr is not to be confused with Zakat on wealth. Zakat-al-Fitr has to be paid by Muslims at the end of Ramadan and before the Eid-al-Fitr prayer. It is considered to be an expiration of any shortcomings during the fasting month. An online Zakat calculator is not required to work out Zakat-al-Fitr. Rather, it is important to know the prescribed amount of this donation from authentic sources.

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) enjoined Zakat-al-Fitr on the Muslims as one Saa of dates or one Saa of barley. According to modern measures, this is equivalent to approximately three kilograms. If a Muslim gives three kilograms of rice or other staple food of his country, that is sufficient, according to scholars. The Prophet (SAW) said in one of the narrations:

A charity is due for every joint in each person on every day the sun comes up…” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Continue your generosity by performing acts of charity in abundance. Once you know how much Zakat to pay, donate your Zakat and Zakat-al-Fitr to Charity Meals this year and help them support the most vulnerable around the world.
