Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr

“Verily, We have sent it (this Quran) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree).” [al-Qadr 97:1]

What is Laylat al-Qadr?

Laylat al-Qadr is the most venerated night of the year. This glorious night marks the beginning of the revelation of the Quran. The first verses of the Noble Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through the Angel Jibril on this night. This is a special night, characterised by mercy and blessings until the break of dawn.

The Laylat al-Qadr Meaning

The scholars described the meaning of “Qadr” to be reverence. By virtue of this, Laylat al-Qadr means the night of honour. Due to the special significance granted to this night, those who single it out for worship also become honourable.

The term “Qadr” also means decree. In the words of the Quran, important matters are decreed on this night for the coming year. The angels descend on this night to carry out the commands of Allah (SWT).

“Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments” [al-Dukhan 44:4]

When is Laylat al Qadr?

According to the teachings of the Prophet (SAW), Laylat-al-Qadr is one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan. The hadith narrated by Aishah (may Allah (SWT) be pleased with her) describes his eagerness to engage in acts of worship on this night. Aishah mentioned that, during the last 10 days, the Prophet used to stay up at night, wake up his family and stay away from marital relations. In a hadith, the Prophet said:

“Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten days of Ramadan.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

In the light of authentic narrations, Laylat-al-Qadr is one of the final 10 odd-numbered nights of Ramadan. In another hadith, the Prophet (SAW) said,

“Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd-numbered nights of the last ten nights.” [Bukhari, 4/259]

Laylat al-Qadr 2025

In Ramadan 2025, the last 10 days are expected to start near 20 March, which would mark the beginning of time when the believers should start seeking Laylat al-Qadr. The arrival of the odd-numbered nights in the last 10 days is the time of Laylat al Qadr nights. So, what night is Laylat-al-Qadr?

It is difficult to tell the exact date, but depending on moonsighting, the 27th of Ramadan might fall on 26 March, which could be the night of Qadr, as believed by many Muslims.

When does Laylat al-Qadr start?

This blessed night is hidden amongst the last 10 days of Ramadan. The important dates in this regard are estimated to start from 26 March until the end of the holy month, subject to the moonsighting.

Signs of Laylat al-Qadr

In the Quran, this night has been described as peaceful. It is characterised by divine compassion and tranquillity. Apart from this, there is evidence to suggest the companions used to recognise this night by physical signs, too. However, it is not essential for a believer to spot these signs for earning the blessings of Laylat al-Qadr.

According to authentic reports from the Prophet (SAW), one of Laylat al Qadr's signs is that the sun rises the following morning with no visible rays.

What to do on Laylat al-Qadr

The believers are advised to strive hard in worship on this distinguished night. The virtuous deeds to maximise reward on this night include prayers, supplication, recitation, reflection, charity and other acts of kindness. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whoever stays up during Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of earning reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (al-Bukhari, 1910; Muslim, 760).

The best supplication to be recited on this night is mentioned in the following hadith reported from Aishah:

“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah if I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say on that night?’ He said, ‘Say: Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibb al-afwa fa’fu anni’ (O Allah, You are forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me).” [Al-Tirmidhi]

Charitable Deeds on Laylat al-Qadr

Charity given on this night carries greater virtue than that of a thousand nights. Every good deed performed on Laylat al-Qadr is rewarded immeasurably. According to the Quran:

“The Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months.” [97:3]

Because of the magnitude of the reward, the believers try to ensure they spend on people in need on this particular night. The Prophet (SAW) used to increase generosity during the blessed month of Ramadan. His charity during this time has been compared to “racing winds” in hadith. Following the illustrious example of the Prophet (SAW), the believers are also encouraged to donate sincerely during the last 10 nights.
