As the holy month of Dhul-Hijjah comes to an end and pilgrims return to their homes from Saudi Arabia having renewed their faith and sense of purpose, their friends and family will be preparing to celebrate Eid ul-Adha.
Eid ul-Adha is a time of year when Muslims all over the world can demonstrate their commitment and belief in their faith. The festival is based on the story of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who once daydreamed that Allah (SWT) instructed him to take his son, Ismail (AS), up Mount Arafat and sacrifice him to prove his love and obedience.
Despite the temptation of the devil to disobey Allah (SWT), the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) obeyed his wishes. As he took out his knife to make this ultimate sacrifice, Allah (SWT) stopped him and replaced his son with a lamb to sacrifice instead. The Prophet Ibrahim (AS) had proven his commitment to Allah (SWT), and ever since then, Muslims around the world sacrifice animals in the name of Allah (SWT).
When is Eid ul-Adha 2024?
The Eid ul-Adha 2024 date starts on Sunday, 16 June and runs for three days. During this time, families and neighbours share food, visit each other, dress up in their best clothes, and celebrate their faith and commitment to Allah (SWT).
Qurbani is the Arabic word for ‘sacrifice’ and refers back to the story of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) on Mount Arafat. An important element of Eid ul-Adha is the donation of Qurbani to those who are needy and vulnerable in communities not just locally but across the globe. An individual’s Qurbani donation will help to purchase one sheep or goat or one-seventh of a cow, buffalo, or camel, and the meat is redistributed among households who are not able to afford their own meat.
Charity Meals is committed to alleviating hunger and addressing food insecurity both in the UK and on a global scale. Whether you are celebrating Eid ul-Adha 2024 in the UK or elsewhere, making your Qurbani donation through Charity Meals will make a big impact on the charity’s mission of building and strengthening resilient communities, providing hunger relief, and alleviating the stress that comes with it.
