Qurbani, also known as Udhiyah, is when Muslims sacrifice and slaughter an animal during Eid al-Adha. During this occasion, Muslims remember Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his love for Allah. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) followed Allah’s command and was obedient. Muslims worldwide participate in Qurbani to fulfil a Sunnah, ensuring that the meat is distributed among the needy, family, and friends.
What Makes Qurbani So Special?
Qurbani is something that is very important to all Muslims. It is a way to show Allah (swt) how grateful a believer is to be blessed with Islam and that partaking in this event may purify one’s soul. It shows how willing a Muslim is to make sacrifices so they can follow Allah’s teachings and guidance. The History of Qurbani and Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
The tradition of Qurbani originates from the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was commanded by Allah in a divine dream to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail (AS). Without hesitation, Ibrahim (AS) submitted to Allah’s will, demonstrating firm faith. However, at the moment of sacrifice, Allah replaced Ismail (AS) with a ram, signifying the acceptance of Ibrahim’s devotion. This moment is commemorated annually during Eid al-Adha, inspiring Muslims to reflect on their own faith and dedication to Allah.
When Will Qurbani Take Place in 2025?
Eid al-Adha follows the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah. In 2025, Qurbani is expected to take place between the evening of Saturday, June 7, and the evening of Wednesday, June 11. Muslims must perform the sacrifice within these specified days to ensure the act is valid.
Lets See What The Quran Says About Qurbani
The Quran highlights the significance of Qurbani in multiple verses. In Surah Al-Hajj (22:37), Allah states:
"It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him."
This verse emphasises that the essence of Qurbani lies in sincerity and devotion rather than the physical act itself.
The Three Duas for Qurbani
Reciting the correct dua for Qurbani is an essential part of the sacrifice. Here are the three important duas including a translation of the Qurbani dua in English:
Dua Before Qurbani: "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest)
Dua During Qurbani: "Inni wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhi fataras-samawati wal-ard hanifan wama ana minal-mushrikeen" (Indeed, I have turned my face towards the One who has created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah.)
Dua After Qurbani: "Allahumma taqabbal minni kama taqabbalta min khalilika Ibrahim wa habibika Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)" (O Allah, accept from me as You accepted from Your close friend Ibrahim and Your beloved Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Find Out What Animals Are Sacrificed For Qurbanis:
Various animals qualify for Qurbani, including:
Sheep and goats (at least one year old, one per person)
Cattle (cows or bulls) (at least two years old, shareable by seven people)
Camels (at least five years old, shareable by seven people)
For an animal to be accepted as a Qurbani it can’t have any flaws such as broken limbs making it easy prey. It also has to be sacrificed in accordance to Islamic guidelines.
Qurbani is more than just an event that takes place every year. A sacrifice will only count if the intention is correct from the outset. By reading the Duas listed above, carrying out the sacrifice at the right time, and ensuring the meat reaches those who are genuinely in need, remembering Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and bearing in mind the Islamic duties that come with it.
