What is Rabi al Awwal?

Rabi al Awwal is the third month in the Islamic Lunar Calendar. Rabi al Awwal occurs after the month of Safar and before Rabi al Thani. Islamic months all have their own significance and Rabi al Awwal is known for three major events.

The first event that took place in the month of Rabi al Awwal is the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This day changed the course of Islamic teaching forever as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had dedicated his entire prophethood in guiding the Ummah to righteousness. His (pbuh) influence has touched the lives of many and continues to work its way through the generations to come.

Mawlid al Nabi is an event that takes place every Rabi al Awwal and is identified as the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Many Muslims celebrate this day by holding something called a Mawlid. Mawlid’s consist of believers that gather to commemorate the life of the Prophet (pbuh). Lectures are given about the lifestyle of the Prophet (pbuh), what his mission was and the trials and tribulations he (peace be upon him) faced. Buildings are usually decorated with LED lights of a green and white colour. Mosques usually host a formal event which walks through the life of the Prophet (pbuh) and a reflective conclusion that wraps up the sessions with self-growth, implementing the teachings into one’s personal life.

The actual birth date of the Prophet (pbuh) is not certified, however Muslims tend to celebrate Mawlid al-Nabi on the 12th Rabi al Awwal.

When is Rabi al Awwal?

Rabbi al Awwal in 2025 is expected to take place on Sunday, 24th August. Please be mindful that dates may vary subject to moon sightings. We strongly recommend speaking to one of your local Mosque councilors for sate accuracy.

One of Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) habits was to engage in active charity and help those in need. Follow the footsteps of the Messenger (peace be upon him) and donate today.
