Frequently Asked Questions
Some may be confused about which assets they need to include in the calculation and which debts can be taken off. Our FAQs contains information to help clear up the most common questions.
Who will receive my Zakat?
Your Zakat is distributed according to the eight recipient categories mentioned in Surah at-Tawbah (9:60):
"Alms-tax is only for the poor and the needy, for those employed to administer it, for those whose hearts are attracted to the faith, for freeing slaves, for those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and for needy travellers. This is an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."
At Charity Meals, your Zakat goes directly to providing food support for those who fall within these eligible categories.Who is required to pay Zakat?
Zakat is obligatory for Muslims who are:
- Adults
- Sane
- Free (not enslaved)
- In possession of wealth above the nisab for one lunar year
- Able to meet their essential needs without hardship
How do I calculate my Zakat?
You can use our Zakat Calculator to work out your amount quickly.
If calculating manually:
Zakatable assets – liabilities = total zakatable wealth
If this figure is above the nisab, you owe 2.5% of that total.
Zakatable assets include:- cash (at home, in bank accounts, savings)
- gold and silver
- investments and shares
- business stock
- rental income held as savings
- money owed to you that you expect to be repaid
Liabilities you can subtract include:
- outstanding debts
- monthly bills due at the time of calculation
- rent/mortgage payment for the current month
- short-term business liabilities
Essential personal items, such as your home, primary car, furniture, and clothing, are not zakatable.
When do I need to pay Zakat?
Zakat becomes due once every Islamic lunar year from the date your wealth first reaches the nisab amount.
Your “Zakat date” stays the same each year. If your wealth falls below nisab, Zakat is not required for that year. What is Zakat?
Zakat is a compulsory act of worship and one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It purifies a Muslim’s wealth and supports those who are eligible to receive help.
If your total wealth reaches or exceeds the nisab threshold for a full lunar year, you must give 2.5% of that wealth as Zakat. What is the Nisab?
The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have before Zakat becomes obligatory.
It is calculated using the value of:- 87.48g of gold, or
- 612.36g of silver
Most scholars recommend using the silver nisab today so that more people give Zakat and more of the needy benefit.
What happens if I missed Zakat in previous years?
You must estimate the outstanding amount as accurately as possible and pay it immediately.
Missed Zakat remains a debt until fulfilled. Can I pay Zakat in advance?
Yes. You may pay Zakat early and allocate it toward your upcoming Zakat year, as long as the full amount is completed by your due date.
Can I pay my Zakat in installments?
Yes. Many people choose to set up monthly payments.
What matters is that the full amount is paid by your Zakat due date. Can I Gift Aid my Zakat payment?
Gift Aid cannot be applied to Zakat because it would add money from non-Zakat sources.
However, you can Gift Aid Sadaqah.
