Fidyah and Kaffarah

While many are required to make up for the missed fasts later in the year, some people are granted exemption due to the illness being of a permanent nature. In such cases, Fidya becomes compulsory in light of the following verse:

Fidya & Kaffarah

Pay your Fidya & Kaffarah and feed the needy

In the sacred month of Ramadan, the act of fasting holds profound significance. However, life's circumstances sometimes make it impossible for some to observe this spiritual practice. In such cases, Fidya and Kaffarah bring salvation and a great opportunity to spread kindness. The following verse mentions sickness as one of the reasons affecting the ability to fast.

"Fasting is for a fixed number of days, and if one of you is sick or on a journey, you will fast the same number of other days later on." - Qur’an | 2:184

While many are required to make up for the missed fasts later in the year, some people are granted exemption due to the illness being of a permanent nature. In such cases, Fidya becomes compulsory in light of the following verse:

The Difference between Fidya and Kaffarah?

Knowing the difference between Kaffarah and Fidya is crucial to fasting in Ramadan. Fidya is the obligatory donation in case of chronic illness, severe old age or weakness. Meanwhile, Kaffarah has to be given as an expiation for deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast. This post aims to further explore the Fidya and Kaffarah meanings by discussing them individually below. So, what is Fidya and Kaffarah?

What is Fidya?

If circumstances prevent you from fasting during Ramadan, like a long-term health condition or severe old age, you can fulfil your religious obligation by paying Fidya. Fidya means compensating for missed fasts by feeding a needy person each day.

How Much is Fidya?

The cost of feeding a person is roughly £4 per day or £120 for the entire month of Ramadan. Your generous donation will ensure that the elderly, sick, disabled and the needy receive the food they need. Let your contributions give hope to those in need this Ramadan.

Note: Fidya is primarily for those who are suffering from long term illness or unable to fast due to old age, and are not able to make up the fasts after Ramadan.

What is Kaffarah?

For those who deliberately miss or break a fast in Ramadan without valid reasons, Kaffarah offers a path to redemption. In such cases, the individuals can either fast continuously for 60 days or choose to feed 60 poor people.

How Much is Kaffarah?

To feed one person per day, it is £4 per person, totalling £240 for feeding 60 poor and needy people. Your donation not only compensates for missed fasts but also contributes to uplifting the lives of many underprivileged individuals.

  • Who Can Receive Fidya?

Fidya is intended only for the poor and needy. Scholars equate Fidya to Zakat, and those entitled to Zakat are considered eligible to receive Fidya as well.

  • Is Fidya Mandatory?

Fasting during Ramadan is mandatory for all able Muslims. It is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. Muslims are obliged to pay Kaffarah or Fidya when they are unable to observe fasting in Ramadan.
