Muslims are encouraged to exercise Sabr (patience) during the times of difficulty. We all know that life isn’t easy and can come with many hardships, but Islam teaches us that Allah is with those that practice patience.
O believers! Seek comfort in patience and prayer. Allah is truly with those who are patient. [Quran 2: 153]
Sabr is a vital part of faith in our Deen. Turning to Allah in patience during the period of tribulation can only give you peace and clarity.
We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and famine and loss of property, life and crops. Give good news to those who patiently endure. [Quran 2: 155]
There are vast benefits of Sabr in Islam. Below are some of the duas to help in navigating us through hardships. These duas are there to increase strength and patience – serving as a reminder that it is Allah alone who has placed us in this difficult and He alone who can get us through it.
This dua for Sabr is from the Quran, calling out to Allah to pour patience upon us, granting us strength to remain focused in our submission to Him through life’s challenges.
Transliteration: Rabbanaa afrigh ‘alaynaa sabraan wa tawaffanaa muslimiin.
Translation: Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You]. [Quran 7: 126]
The following supplication was recited by Prophet Yunus A.S who called out to Allah whilst he was in the belly of a whale. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has said that No Muslim person says it, for any situation whatsoever, except that Allah Most High answers his call. [Tirmidhi]
It is the most effective dua to recite for gaining the Mercy of Allah during any trial or difficulty.
Transliteration: La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu mina z-zalimin.
Translation: There is no deity but You. Glory be to You! Verily, I have been among the wrongdoers. [Quran 21:87]
Another dua to recite during difficult times is the following:
حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ
Transliteration: ḥasbuna Allahu wa niʿma al-wakil. [Quran 3: 173]
Translation: Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.’
This Dua can be recited at any time; however, many say it during times of difficulty or at times when dealing with matters that are beyond our control. The concept of this dua is assuring to Muslims as it reiterates that Allah is the one to take care of us, setting the foundation to hope and strength.
It has been narrated that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
If any servant (of Allah) who suffers a calamity says {the below dua), Allah will give him reward for affliction and would give him something better than it, in exchange. [Sahih Muslim]
Transliteration: Inna lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un. Allahumma ajurni fi musibati wakhluf li khayran minha.
Translation: Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Allah we shall return. O Allah! Reward me for my calamity and replace it for me that which is better.
It has been narrated that Prophet Muhammad SAW would recite the following dua to remain firm in faith.
Transliteration: Ya Muqallibal qulub, thabbit qalbi ‘ala dinik.
Translation: O Turner of hearts, set firm my heart upon Your religion. [Tirmidhi]
Allah tells us in the Quran that those that endure patience are the ones that will succeed.
Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance – that they are the attainers [of success]. [Quran 18: 111]
Giving Sadaqah at times of hardship allows us to reflect on the sufferings of those struggling around the world. It sits as a reminder to appreciate what you have and to remain patient whatever the circumstances.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity. [Tirmidhi]
As for the one who is charitable, mindful [of Allah] and [firmly] believes in the finest reward, we will facilitate for them the Way of Ease. [Quran 92:5-7]
